Two of the biggest threats to nature. Atlantic blue crabs alien to a Greek lagoon, hanging from a discarded plastic cup.
Our group visited the local fishery of a lagoon in northern Greece near Kavala. The fishery operates at the mouth of the lagoon - they let small fish into the lagoon and then close off the entrance to grow them for several months and then let them out through a trap to catch fish they can sell for food. These non-native blue crab from North America have spread throughout the Mediterranean but according to the fishermen are only a problem to them every few years, when their numbers increase dramatically and the crabs eat voraciously so they outcompete the native fish in the lagoons. The fishermen would like to catch and sell the crabs but so far have not been able to create a local market nor the process to send them around the world.
