Halema'uma'u Caldera, within Kilauea Caldera, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
AKA 'The Fire Pit', this pit crater is thought to be home to the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire, Pele. Halemaumau means 'house of everlasting fire'. The visible ledge almost half way up the sides marks the level of the 1967-1968 lava lake, and the floor is covered with lava from the 1974 erution. You can also see where sulphur dioxide (SO2) has spilled down the walls of the caldera. The caldera is 280 feet (85m) deep and 3000 feet (915m) across. Taken from Halemaumau Overlook, just off Crater Rim Drive. A 16mm equivalent lens gives a wide-angle perspective, and distorts the size of the boulder close to the lens.
