DNA fingerprinting. Dog breeder Mrs Janet Foad of Thetford, Norfolk, with her Siberian huskies. When the bitch Kynda (upper right) became unexpectedly pregnant, Mrs Foad needed to know which of her dogs was the father in order to register the litter with proof of pedigree. DNA fingerprinting by Cellmark Diagnostics determined that the father was Ali (upper left). The other three dogs in the picture are the puppies: Trushka (upper centre), who was the puppy tested, Tahlk (lower left) & Mak (lower right). Proof of paternity in animals or humans is one of the major applications of the DNA fingerprinting technique discovered in 1984 by Prof. Alec Jeffreys of Leicester University.
