A few hours before it had emerged from the mouth of a vase-like cell, one of the ova- rian capsules which studded the stem of an old well- peopled plumularia shrub, and which had been gradually developed from its substance by a process analogous to budding. And then if we follow the history of this earlier shrub backward, it will only lead us through exactly the same correspondent stages—primal cell, planule, ovarian capsule, stem, and so on interminably.
