The Dental cosmos . develop-ment of the bones of thenose, and hypertrophy ofthe bones and mucous mem-brane, are concomitants. Agood illustration of hyper-trophy of mucous membranefrom want of use is observedby dentists when gums puffup, thicken, and extendone-half to three-fourths ofthe length of the teeth fromlack of brushing. It wouldbe absurd for anyone to saythat mouth-breathing is thecause of one case of V-shaped arch in every twenty, and that some other causeproduced the rest of the de-formities. We must have alaw which will work in all va-rieties of contracted archesas well as the V-shaped,which variety constitutes avery small percentage of thewhole. I have watched thedevelopment of these dif-ferent varieties for the pastfourteen years, have takenimpressions of the mouthsof some of the most marked cases every three months, and have com-pared them. I have also produced most of these different typicalforms of irregularities during the movement of the teeth for the pur-pose of correcting MOUTH-BREATHING, ETC. 929 Having, then, discovered that the arrest of the development of themaxillary bones is the cause of contracted jaws and irregularities ofthe teeth, have we not a good foundation to work upon to discover thecause of deflected septum and of mouth-breathing? The following tables will exhibit the differences in the heights ofvaults, both in normal and defective jaws. The height is taken cen-trally and vertically from the gingival plane on a transverse line inter-secting the gingival crests between the second bicuspids and firstmolars. For comparison with measurements of denuded crania, de-duct .07 for the thickness of the soft tissues. Fig. 7 shows the instru-ment used, and the manner of making the measurements. Normal Jaw.
