Thereupon Senator Morrismade a personal request of the congressman that young Grantbe given the appointment. Hamer readily assented and, in thelanguage of General Grant, This healed the breach between thetwo, never after reopened. The intimate friendship of SenatorMorris and Jesse R. Grant was the chief influence that opened.
