Bhutan: A thangka of Milarepa (1052-1135), Dhodeydrag Gompa, Thimphu, 19th-20th century. Jetsun Milarepa was a Tibetan siddha who was infamously known as a murderer in his youth before turning to Buddhism to repent and being a highly accomplished disciple. One of Tibet's most famous yogis and poets, his teachings are known among several schools of Tibetan Buddhism. It is estimated that between two thirds and three quarters of the Bhutanese population follow Vajrayana Buddhism, which is also the state religion. About one quarter to one third are followers of Hinduism.
