. Illustrations of prophecy : particularly the evening and morning visions of Daniel, and the apocalyptical visions of John . 3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded todeath ; and his deadly wound was healed : and all theworld wondered after the beast. The head of the beast, wounded todeath, represented the overthrow of impe-rial authority, when Rome became a duke-dom to the exarchate of Ravenna. Five ofthe heads of the dragon were supersededbefore the time John wrote, as will be ex-plained to the apostle. Chap. xvii. Theimperial head, name, and dignity, was after-wards partially revived in the emperorsof Germany,—its power still further healedor restored by Bonaparte, and may be whol-ly recovered for a time, yet, before thebeast goeth into perdition. The pagan, persecuting power of this head received awound by Constantine, though the imperialpower or head, continued sound for centu-ries afterwards. WORSHIP OF THE DRAGON. 365. 4 And they worshipped the dragonwhich gave powerunto the beast: andthey worshipped thebeast, saying, Who islike unto the beast ?who is able to makewar with him ? All the Roman world; wondered af-ter the beast. Thus they virtually worship-ped the dragon, by submitting without re-serve, to tlie same idolatrous, persecutingpower as before, only in another form. Itmust ever be borne in mind that the beastwhich rises out of the sea, to which thisdragon first gave his seat and power, is thesecular Roman beast, corresponding withDaniels terrible beast. Papal Rome, an-swering to the little horn of Diniers beast,is another power to be described in the nextSection. Compare Dan. vii—7, with thesepassages, and Rev. xvii. A right under-standing of the distinction between the sec-ular and papal powers of Rome, is essentialto every reader. Although these powersacted in concert, they exercised distinctfunctions. 31* 366 ILLUSTRATIONS OF PROPHECY,
