BRITISH GUIANA—DEMERARA The Moravians have been working in Demerara since1878. This work is carried on exclusively by a nativeministry working among the negroes and coolies. THE CONFERENCE AT HAVANA,CUBA BACKGROUND AND SIDELIGHTS As was stated in the opening session, the purposes ofthis conference were the same as the purposes of thePanama Congress. One can never put in any oneformula a statement of attitude and purpose that willsatisfy all Christian men who are trying to carry thegospel anywhere or to deal with any great moral orspiritual problem. We go into these conferences onprecisely the same platform and basis on which ourchurches exist in the United States and on which ourmissions in Latin America are planned, on the basison which they are actually at work now. There are thesechurches and missions all over the Latin-American what ground are they there? On that very groundwe gather to discuss the work. We go into these fieldsto make the Latin-American peoples realize that we aretheir friends. We carry the Bible, the gospel of a livingChrist, and a free and open school. That is what ourmissions are for
