False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a colony of Bacillus anthracis, a Gram positive species of bacteria which is highly pathogenic and causes the disease anthrax in man. B. anthracis is transmitted to humans by contact with contaminated animal hair, hides or excrement. The disease occurs in two forms, either attacking the lungs and causing pneumonia, (woolsorters's disease) or the skin, producing severe ulceration (malignant pustule). Treatment with antibiotics such as penicillin may be effective if used promptly; untreated cases often progress to fatal septicaemia. Magnification: x3500 at 35mm size.
