Wild Beast Fights
Gladiatorial combats were popular in ancient Rome. Another type of arena fight was the venatio, or wild beast fights, during which a bestiarius would fight a wild animal—here lions—that were loosed into the arena. The bestiarius was considered inferior to the gladiator and bestiarii had little or no training, unlike gladiators. The equipment of the bestiarius varied. In this late 1880s drawing, the bestiarii have little protection against the lions. The venatio was not widely popular in ancient Rome.
