Tlicsc spaces arc filledwitli molten zinc, which enters into and fills out all the irregularitiesof the rolled surfaces, thus giving an absolutely continuous and per-fect hearing throughout the whole length and width of the flanges ofIhe plates. It is ohvlous that such a continuous contact could not b; by inserting wedges between the plates and the trams, or the platesand the head of the rail. The wedges arc then driven in with alight hammer until the straight-edge has a continuous bearing. While the plates arc held in place by four temporary bolts (), the rivet holes arc reamed to I in. diameter (I-ig. 5) by a. REAMKK obtained by the most laborious machining or milling of those sur-faces. The adhesion of the molten zinc to the rails and plates, to-gether with the body-bound rivets, hold the joint permanently tight, and at the same time prevent expansion, thus making the rails method of constructing the joint is as follows: .^fter the portable pneumatic reamer (Kig. 6). The 12 i-in. steel rivetsare then driven by a portable pneumatic riveter (Fig. 7). Thisinsures the filling up of the holes by the rivets. The next stepis to put in place the iron clamps for holding the asbestos clothpads and clay on the bottom and at the ends of plate and abovethe base of rail.
