View NW of beehive huts (clochans) within the circular stone wall of Caher Martin cashel (fort), Glanfahan, Dingle, County Kerry, Republic of Ireland. The huts vary in shape from round to rectangular, several stand together within an enclosure inside the fort, one hut retains its complete corbelled stone dome. One of many forts & collections of clochans on the S slopes of Mount Eagle near Slea Head on the Dingle Peninsula overlooking Dingle Bay. This fort may date back to the Iron Age, but occupation of the hillside was probably at its height during the C6th-10thAD. Probably secular, but Peter Harbison has suggested that some of the beehive cells were used to house Early Christian pilgrims visiting the many sacred sites in the area. A souterrean (an underground stone passage) inside the fort has been filled in.
