To supplement thisaction, they also adopted an overture toSynod requesting Synod to appoint a similarcommittee wifth a representative from eachPresbytery. | The Presbyterian Church has always beena strong advocate for and a pioneer in highereducatipn. In our State to-day her college,Davidson stands among the first. As a pre-paratory school for Davidson, the Presbyte-rian High School of Norih Carolina atMebane commands the confidence of all andthe patronage of many of our people. Butthere is very limited provision among ourpeople for the primary education of our boysand girls. The free or public schools in ourcountry distHcts by reason of limited fundsand constant change of teachers are very im-perfect and itadequate—a very poor substi-tute for the ! parochial or church school offormer years.! Yet they are the only schoolj. I available in many ]lections. Consequentlymany of the boys and girls that enter theschools and academies of higher grade arevery imperfectly prepared and are handi-capped throughout their whole course. Aswise master builders should we not makebetter provisiun tor foundation work f Shouldwe not also set the tide in early life and turnthe current towards the higher grade schoolsand colleges of our own Church V In a word,if we are to develop and support our collegesand high schools not only with means, butalso with well equipped students, we mustorganize and sustain well-conducted acade-mies under the auspices of our stronger coun-try churches. Moreover, if we are to push anddevelop the Presbyterian churches in themissionary sections of our State, we mustorganize and liberally support under the au-spices of our Church and Christian Educa-tion Committees, parochial schools in thesedistricts, similar to those started under in Wautauga and Mitchel
