But the General 408 American Methodism Conference of 1804 settled the matter by locating the officein New York city, where it has ever since remained. InNew York Cooper and his assistants were for a few yearsregularly stationed preachers, but since 1808 all agents havebeen left free from pastoral cares. In that year the limit ofofficial tenure was fixed at eight years, but since 1836 theagents have been elected quadrennially. The earliest home of the Book Room in New York wasprobably in Gold Street. The city Directory for 1805 givesthe Methodist Book Store at 249 Pearl Street. Threeyears later it was in a plain two-story dwelling house inChurch Street, near White. The Rev. Daniel Devinne, thefather of the eminent printer, has described a visit whichhe made to the Methodist Book
