Implanting an ear grommet. Grommet (tympanostomy tube, white) in a surgical dish being held by a surgeon. This device is inserted into the eardrum to keep the middle ear aerated and mucus-free. This is mainly used for treating otitis media (glue ear), a common childhood inflammation of the middle ear. Grommets usually remain in the eardrum for a period of time, ranging from several months to several years, before spontaneously falling out of the eardrum.
