Argentina, Patagonia, Neuquen province, San Martin de los Andes. San Martin de los Andes is a small city located in a narrow glacial valley and beside the Lacar Lake. It is only 45 km from the border with Chile and about 1,545 km from Buenos Aires. According to the 2001 census It has a population of about 24,000 inhabitants including the surrounding areas. It was founded in 1898 and it is a popular tourist destination during both Summer and Winter. During the Summer one can enjoy the beautiful scenery while practicing outdoor sports and activities like hiking, kayak, mountain bike, rafting or the Winter the city is the base to access Chapelco Ski Center located only 20 km away. Around the city there are communal lands that belong to two different Mapuche communities.
