Intracing with his trenchant pen the devious operptionsof the professional politician, in which he is inimit-able, his account is open, perhaps, to the objectionthat all his contemporaries are treated as mere place-seekers, while many of them have since been judgedby the people to be worthy statesmen. His writingsseem slightly open to the criticism that they exhibita little splenetic partiality against those of his con-temporaries who were prominent during liis term ofoffice as Governor.
