"This is a substantial mixed-use development in the Smithfield area of Manchester at the northern end of Shudehill. Before Muse entered into a development agreement with Manchester City Council, this part of the city was widely regarded as a ‘no go’ area. The award winning first phase comprised the refurbishment of the former historic fishmarket walls and the regeneration of a Grade One listed building to create a large public courtyard framed by new and old buildings. Phase 2 included retail and A2 space as well as affordable housing. The third phase of residential development, Icon 25, was completed in 2006, while a Crowne Plaza hotel and a Holiday Inn Express hotel formed the fourth and fifth phases respectively. Construction of the sixth phase - One Smithfield Square, comprising 77 apartments and over 6,000 sq ft of ground floor commercial space - is currently under way. The scheme has been masterplanned for a further phase of development, involving redevelopment of the listed ‘Mackie Mayor’ building."
