It is agreat secret of success in cultivating any particularclass of plants to get used to them. There is a whole volume of philosophy in the lastsentence, and it applies directly and peculiarly to thesubject now before us. Whoever hopes to succeed infern growing must first grow a few in order to getused to them, and having got used to them opera-tions may be extended and money may be spentwith some prospect of remuneration; but whoeverattempts too much at first will find that effort andmoney and hope and enthusiasm have been wasted, for disappointments in the early stages of a pursuit X3 c o s O)in CD ooro m z D m o c 2 ^ D p ^E • CD •-•3 o O -f o o s:2 CD ^ f^ o -J r- o C 3 ^ !^ CD (-1- O ^ T CD o X&^ oo Ui o o CD • TlCD3D. Ferns in Pots. 27 are ten times more dispiriting than when they occurafter we have been rewarded with many successes. Suppose the beginner in fern growing to take inhand a dozen species only; what shall they be? Ishould recommend the following :—Lastrea Filix ?nas,Lastrea dilatata, Polystlchum aculeatum, Polystichumangulare, Poly podium vulgare, Polypodium dryopteris,Athyrium Filix foemina, Asplenium marinum, Scolo-pendrium vulgare, Cyrtomium falcatum, Woodwardiaradicans, Lomaria chiliensis. These are among thecheapest and most easily procured. The first eight ofthem are British^ and the remaining four them to be all small nursery plants, theymight all be potted in five-inch pots, or what are termed48s, but the size of the pot must depend upon thesize of the plants, and that size will suit which willtake their roots without cramping them, and allow verylittle space beyond. Fine specimens can be grownwi
