A pair of great spotted woodpeckers have a nest in the trunk of a dead tree. Th e tree is full of old nest holes. The adult birds are ferrying grubs to the chicks in the nest. As the chicks get older and bolder they start to poke their heads out of the nest to greet their parents. The adult male has a red nape which the adult female lacks. The young have red feathers on their foreheads.
