The peaked hills behind usrose from a sea of tearing sand, and before us inthe distance rose low, undulating clay mounds,beyond which one could catch a glimpse of thelimestone cliffs so typical of the Nile valley. Inthe afternoon we crossed these mounds and de-scended into a very maze of hillocks, amidst whichwe camped. Amongst these mounds we met acouple of Bedwin, the purpose of whose presencewas entirely obscure. Our guide exchanged theusual greetings with them, and then in a lowvoice began to talk of the miserable dog whichtrotted dejectedly behind his camel. Again hepointed to his almost empty bag of food, and atlast dismounted, fastened a rope to the creaturesneck, and handed it to the Bedwin. The usualhowls floated to us on the wind as we rode on-wards, but the high spirits of the guide
