Boys and girls seated in Mr Davis's classroom at Woodfield Avenue School, c 1899. Woodfield Avenue is off the Penn Road in Wolverhampton. Many families did not want their children to attend school at all, as they needed the income raised from sending their children to work. In 1861 only around 10 per cent of poorer children attended primary school, often for less than a year and rarely beyond the age of ten.
