The Missionary Settlement - or the Deserted Village on the side of Slievemore mountain, Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland.
The Missionary Settlement - or the Deserted Village - consists of some 80 – 100 stone cottages located along a mile long stretch of road on the southern slopes of Slievemore mountain, Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland. The village was gradually abandoned because of evictions for non-payment of rent, the 1845-49 famines and the emigration throughout the successive years. During later summers, it became a 'booley village' temporary accommodation during the summer grazing of cattle.
