Circular fishtraps in the important wetlands of Logtak (loktak)Lake in Manipur ,north east India


Loktak lake is considered to be the lifeline of the State of Manipur due to its importance in the socio-economic and cultural life of the people. It is the largest natural freshwater lake in the north - eastern region of India and plays an important role in the ecological and economic security of the region. A large population living in and around the lake depends upon the lake resources for sustenance. The staple food of Manipur is directly linked to Loktak lake. The lake is rich in biodiversity and was designated as a Wetland of International Importance under Ramsar Convention in 1990. It is the home of the Sangai deer (brow antlered deer) Loktak Lake is home to floating islands of vegetation known as Phumdis. In fact much of the 'land' around the lake is also floating! The largest single mass of Phumdis covers 40 square kilometers. The attached overlay shows the really enormous extent of the floating mass. The lake covers about 40 square miles, which is the source of the Manipur River.
