Below the middle of the leg, at any point tothe termination of its course, this artery may befound on the fibular side of the extensor propriuspollicis tendon, which must be the guide for theincision. But it lies much more deeply in theliving subject than would be surmised from amere dissection of the dead. The coveringsmust be divided with the usual precautions, andneither the peronaeal nerve nor the vense comitesshould be wounded with the knife, or be includedin the ligature. In wounds of the arteries in the sole of thefoot, (except perhaps of the external plantar, opposite the base of the little toe,) it is scarcelyjudicious to enlarge the wound with the view of securing the bleedingpoint. But methodical pressure should be applied after the mannerrecommended at page 294; and if that fails, the posterior tibial arteryshould be tied behind the inner ankle—and the anterior tibial on thedorsum of the foot likewise, if necessary.*. * For further information on these operations, vide Manec on the Arteries ; the worksof Harrison, Listen, and Fergusson, and Brittans Translation of Malgaigne.
