The next in order is the fine old favorite, P. edulis superba. For whites we have mueen Victoria and P. festiva maxima, though sometimes both of these are a little tardy. We long have needed a good red and we have found it in Richard Carvel. It is among the earliest. In appear- ance it is radiant and glistening and it is exceedingly fragrant. It seems ready to bloom on the least provocation. I have seen charming flowers produced on it from roots planted the previous fall. Though high-priced, its merits are such that I consider it cheap. The grower should be able to get fifty plants from one in a few years and then the initial cost would seem trifling. Do not forget that September is the planting time. C. S. Harrison.
