This is chiefly dependent,he points out, on the location and extent of the areasof high and low pressure over the sea. In thebeginning of this vol-ume, Mr. Rhodes givesa brief recapitulation ofthe salient events of theCivil War, and followsthis with a detailed ac-count of ShermansGeorgia Appomattoxcampaign, Lees sur-render, and the assas-sination of Lincoln areall treated within thelimits of a single chap-ter. A long chapter isdevoted to an accountof society at the Northduring the war, and asimilar chapter to soci-ety at the South. Another chapter is assigned to thetreatment of pri-soners of war.
