This area was inside the Oosterbeek perimeter held for over a week by the British 1st Airborne during Operation Market Garden. Operation Berlin took place on the night of 25–26 September 1944 and relates to the organised evacuation of the remnants of the British 1st Airborne Division, trapped in the Oosterbeek pocket following the failed attempt to capture the road bridge in Arnhem at the start of Operation Market Garden.
