Japan: Emperor Go-Saga (1 April 1220 - 17 March 1272), 88th Emperor of Japan (r. 1242-1246). Portrait by Fujiwara no Tamenobu (fl. 1261-1304), early 14th century. Emperor Go-Saga (Go-Saga-tennō, 1220-1272), personal name Kunihito, was the 88th emperor of Japan, according to the traditional order of succession. Named after the 8th-century Emperor Saga, Go-Saga abdicated in 1246 in favour of his son, Emperor Go-Fukakusa; thus began his reign as cloistered emperor, ruling from the monastery. He compelled Go-Fukakusa in 1259 to step aside for his other son, who became Emperor Kameyama.
