The lateral thorax is dusted grey to avariable degree. The male abdominal tergites2—5 with elongate, brown to black, dorsalspots in front of hind margin, usually about asbroad as scutellum and twice as long; posteriorsegments blackened. Female with a continuousdorsal stripe on tergites 2—7, composed of tri-angular spots, largest on tergites 4—6; tergites 260 Tijdschrift VOOR Entomologie, deel 127, afl. 11, 1984 (1985). laterally and sternites ventrally with elongatebrown to dark brown spots. Specimens from thecontinent are usually to a much lesser degreevariegated with brown to black markings, espe-cially on the abdomen, and they have the thoraxnot dusted grey. Hypopygium and ovipositor asin figs. 69—72. Distribution and period of flight. — Materialwas examined from Hokkaido, Honshu, Sado,Kyushu, Shikoku, North Korea and China(Manchuria). Savchenko (1966) in addition re-ports Amurskaya oblast and Primorskiy the continent and on Hokkaido the speciesis on the wing from the end of May until the endof July, on the other Japanese islands the re-cords are much earlier, from mid-April to mid-June, with one record for August 9.
