The normal conditiun ofthe switch is to derail the electric car and in order that the car maysafely pass the switch the conductor of the electric car is obliged tocros- over the railroad track and by raising the lever open his object of placing this throwing lever at the crossing is obvious,as the conductor in crossing the track to the lever has a full view ofthe steam track each way. In this particular case, advantage wastaken of the curves in both electric and steam tracks as will be seen.
