Activated refers to the micro porosity of carbon granules processed with steam or chemicals. 1 gram of activated carbon has a surface area in excess of 500 metres squared for adsorption, the adhesion of atoms, ions, biomolecules or molecules of gas, liquid, or dissolved solids to a surface. Granulated carbons are used for water treatment and deodorization. Activated carbon is usually derived from charcoal, wood or coconut shells and the granules are screened to provide a uniform size of granules. The granules in this picture are between 2 and 6 millimetres long.
