Engraving from The Illustrated Exhibitor published in September 1851. The Eagle Slayer statue by John Bell in the Coalbrookdale Dome. Made from Cast Iron. Previously only ever used for industrial use. Based on the Aesop fable of a shepherd boy who finds an eagle has killed one of his sheep. Looking on the ground he discovers a feather from the Eagle which he fashions into an arrow & kills the bird. Likely moral - Sometimes we unknowingly give our enemies the means of our own destruction.
