The North America Nebula (NGC 7000 or Caldwell 20) is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, close to Deneb, named for its shape. It covers an area more than four times the size of the full moon. Due to its low surface brightness it is not normally seen with the unaided eye. Between the Earth and the nebula lies a band of interstellar dust that absorbs the light of stars and nebulae behind it, and thereby determines the shape we see. Deneb, or alpha Cygni, is the brightest star in the constellation of Cygnus. It is one of the vertices of the asterism known as the Summer Triangle and forms the 'head' of the Northern Cross. It is the 19th brightest star in the night sky, with an apparent magnitude of Its distance from Earth is estimated to be about 1600 light-years, making it one of the most luminous stars. This image was created from photographic material taken with the Oschin Telescope at Mount Palomar Observatory, forming part of the Digitized Sky Survey 2.
