The high mineral content water provides a stark contrast to the desolate lava rock plains that surround it. Just beyond the Blue Lagoon smoke and steam bellow from the Svartsengi Geothermal Power Station that lies above a fault line that contributes to the production of cheap green power and hot water. Five geothermal plants provide one quarter of the nation's electricity.
