Riordan Central Library, headquarters for the Los Angeles Public Library system in Los Angeles, California, USA. A symbolic sun appears on all four sides of the pyramid, which is crowned by a hand holding a torch to represent "The Light of Learning." Below the tower's parapet on one facade are sculptured busts of famous thinkers, including Virgil, Socrates, Emperor Justinian and Leonardo da Vinci. Architect Bertram Goodhue designed the landmark Art Deco building, which opened in 1926.
