Museumplein, Amsterdam. Sunday 28th March, 2021. This was the twelfth event since mid-January that hundreds of protesters gathered to vent their disapproval relating to the Dutch government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Again, the demonstrations under the guise of ‘Drink coffee’ made no attempt to social distance themselves at meters, barley a face mask and not a ‘coffee-cup’ in sight. The police had estimated the number by midday to be approximately 800 to 1000 people. Numerous warning by the police to vacate the area went unheeded and the deployment of water cannon, canine unites, and both mounted and unmounted police did not seem to diminish their number. 334 coffee drinkers were arrested, and 305 people were banned from the Museumplein and surrounding streets for the next nine weeks. The estimated cost of police deployment on the Museumplein and the local area as of last week, was more than million euros. Figures quoted: NOS Online News. © Charles M Vella/Alamy Stock Photo
