MaxRoach, drummer, percussionist, and composer,10 2007 of world class. Devised new methd for playing drums.
Max Roach, drummer, percussionist, and composer, 10 Jan 1924 - 16 Aug 2007 was a drummer of world class. He also led his own Groups and was a passionate believer in the American Civil Rights groups. Grew up in a musical home, at age 18 was called on to fill in for Sonny Greer and play in The Duke Ellington Orchestra. Roach , along with Kenny Clarke devised a new method of playing the drums. By playing the beat in standard 4/4 time on the "ride" cymbal instead of the bass drum, Roach & Clarke developed a flexible rhythm that allowed soloists to play freely, the new approach left time for the drummer to insert accents on the snare drum, the crash cymbal, and other parts of the set. It enabled the drummer to become a soloist in the Orchestra. Max Roach said of the new method of playing, 'I came to realize that drumming wasn't just keeping time, it was playing music'. He played with bands, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Miles Davies and others. In 1952 he co-founded Debut Records with Charlie 1960 he composed ' We Insist! - Freedom Now' for abraham Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation. He recorded 'Money Jungle 1962' with Charlie Mingus and Duke Ellington, regarded as the best trio records ever made. In the eighties he began presenting entire concerts solo. He appeared with every name in town. In the 1994 he also appeared on 'The Drum Also Waltzes' during the All Stars Recording Sessions. He passed away 16 Aug 2007, Over 1900 people attended his funeral service.
