A bonanza farm was the phrase used in the 1870s in the United States to refer to very large farms - those that grew and harvested mostly wheat. And this was all during the Industrial Revolution. These farms were most usually close to the route of the Northern Pacific Railroad. This illustration, which dates to 1887, shows a long row of workers guiding horses as they dragged a heavy frame with sharp teeth that would break up the farming land and level the plowed land—harrowing the field.
