The Statue dedicated to Richard Kirkland, the Angel of Marye's Heights, Fredericksburg, VA. The Union army suffered its heaviest defeat of the Civil War during the Battle of Fredericksburg. A sole Confederate soldier took water and blankets out to the dying Union troops in front of the Confederate lines by the Stone Wall of the Sunken Road on Marye's Heights. he was Richard Rowland Kirkland. The Union troops did not fire on this Confederate soldier as he moved amongst the dying.
