The first battle of the Civil War was fought at BullRun. \a., July _[, 1861. General McDowell with 60,000men, led tlie Inion .-irmy to what was expected to be certainvictory, so cer^ain that many members of Congress on horse-back and in carriages followed the army to the scene of con-flict believing that the rebels would run at the first sound ofthe battle. Among the number was Hon. John T. Nixon,then serving his second term in Congress. In company withfriends he took carriage for Bull Run onlv to see the Union (42).
