Bunion surgery. Image 1 of 12. Foot with a bunion before undergoing chevron osteotomy and distal phalanx bone (end toe bone) removal surgery. The arrow indicates to the surgeon which foot to operate on. Bunions (hallux valgus) are swellings of the joint between the big toe and the first metatarsal bone, which causes the base of each big toe to project outwards and their tips to point inwards. A chevron osteotomy is where the first metatarsal bone of the big toe is cut, using a V-shaped incision, repositioned and screwed into place. For a series of the procedure, see images M551/523 - M551/534.
