Steam locomotive on the Semmering railway, Lower Austria, c1935. The Semmeringbahn was the first mountain railway in Europe built with a standard gauge track. It was constructed between 1848 and 1854, and was a feat of engineering, given the very difficult terrain and the variations in altitude along the route. From "Österreich - Land Und Volk", (Austria, Land and People). [R. Lechner (Wilhelm Müller), Vienna, c1935]
