Broad bean root. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the centre of a young root of a broad bean (Vicia faba) plant. The majority of tissue seen here is parenchyma (large blue cells). At centre is the developing vascular bundle, consisting of xylem (dark red) and phloem (small blue cells between groups of xylem) cells, which transport water and carbohydrates around the plant respectively. Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
