A shadow projecting to theright and lying nearer to the front than the back indicates an aneurismof the ascending aorta, whereas a similar bulge to the left, and lying nearerthe back than the front, indicates the presence of an aneurism of thedescending aorta. There are other methods of detecting the position and origin of an aorticaneurism : (1) The tube may be moved from side to side or up and down. (2) The patient may be rotated, and observations made of the change.
