Asteroid strike. Computer artwork showing a large asteroid about to strike the Earth with two other asteroids hitting the ground in the background. Such impacts would cause devastation over a wide area, throwing a huge amount of material into the atmosphere. This would block out sunlight and lower global temperatures. It is thought that a similar single impact was responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago.
