Lettuce thrives best in good, rich, moist ground, and is a universal favorite, is almost free from insects and disease, which makes it of easy culture to every one. To grow fine head lettuce for the principle early crop, sow the seed in September in the open ground. Transplant, when large enough, into cold frames, and protect the plants during the winter in the same manner as for early cabbage, then set the plants out early in April; or sow the seeds in hot beds in February or March, and afterward, for early salad, transplant into a sheltered border with a southern exposure. For successive crops, sowings may be made in open ground as early as the spring opens, and continued until July. Simpson's Uarly Curled. A leading early market variety.
