The bell was donated by Queen Gunilla Bjelke at the end of the 16th century and was originally a chapel bell. It is still rung twice every day, a reminder of the times when townspeople were warned not to carry unprotected lanterns on the streets at night. It hangs on the bulwark Styrbiskop at Uppsala Castle and is a symbol for Uppsala and its university.
