Hip and thigh muscles. Artwork of a side (lateral) view of some of the muscles (red), ligaments (white) and bones of the human hips and thighs. At lower centre is the head of the femur. At upper centre is the posterior surface of the ilium bone. The group of muscles to the right of the femoral head are the hip's lateral rotator group. At lower right are the upper part of the hamstrings (biceps femoris; semitendinosus). The three muscles at left are (left to right): the tensor fascia latae (attached to the iliac crest), the rectus femoris muscle (attached to the anterior inferior iliac spine), and the vastus lateralis (attached to the head of the femur).
